Catfight in Maui pits Memphis against Kentucky
Basketball Betting Lines
11/22/2006 -
Maui, HI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The third-place game of the Maui Invitational pits
the 12th-ranked Memphis Tigers against the 20th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats.
Memphis beat up on Jackson State to open the season and knocked off
Oklahoma on Tuesday, the first day of this tournament. The Tigers needed to
knock off Georgia Tech to compete for the Maui Invitational title, and
despite getting out to a strong start in yesterday's clash, a shaky showing
in the second half led to a 92-85 setback to Georgia Tech.
As for Kentucky, it enters this game with a 3-1 record, as the only
loss came last night to UCLA by a 73-68 final. The Wildcats barely held
on to beat DePaul by an 87-81 score in the first round, and Tubby Smith's
squad hopes to improve on the results of last season when the squad failed
to dominate the SEC as it has become so accustomed to doing. The Kentucky Wildcats and Memphis Tigers have never met on the hardwood, surprising
considering the success of both programs.
Memphis shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half against Georgia Tech
and led by 16 points at intermission. Unfortunately, the Tigers surrendered
56.7 percent shooting from the floor in the second half and sent the Yellow
Jackets to the foul line 35 times over the final 20 minutes. That enabled Tech
to score 62 points in the second half and record the comeback victory. Memphis
suffered a 52-31 rebounding disadvantage in the clash, including a 23-8
deficit on the offensive boards. Chris Douglas-Roberts led the way for the
Tigers with 26 points in defeat and Jeremy Hunt pitched in 16 points off the
bench. As for Antonio Anderson, he contributed 15 points. Through three games,
Douglas-Roberts leads Memphis in scoring with 18.0 ppg, and Hunt is second
with his 13.7 ppg. Anderson checks in with 12.3 ppg for the Tigers, who are
averaging 91.0 ppg while limiting their opponents to 75.3 ppg on 37.6 percent
shooting from the floor.
Randolph Morris is a junior center for Kentucky who is back in the lineup
after flirting with the NBA after his freshman year and missing much of his
sophomore year. He is averaging 15.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg through four outings,
both of which are team-highs. Ramel Bradley adds some balance to the lineup
with 14.3 ppg, and Joe Crawford rounds out the trio of double-digit scorers
with 13.5 ppg. In the loss to UCLA, Kentucky was outscored 50-22 in the paint
and 21-8 off turnovers. The Wildcats finished with three more turnovers than
assists, but they put forth a solid effort in fighting back from a 17-point
deficit in the first half to make the game close. Four players reached double
figures in scoring in the loss, as Crawford led the way with 16 points.
Derrick Jasper contributed 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and
Morris posted 11 points. Perry Stevenson rounded out the group with 10 points.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook
Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds. The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.
Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.
Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
