Gasol's thriple-double leads Lakers over Hawks

02/18/2009 -
Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pau Gasol had his third career triple-
double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, and despite Kobe Bryant's
lowest point total in over a year, the Los Angeles Lakers dominated Atlanta,
96-83, at the Staples Center.
Coming off his co-MVP performance with ex-Laker Shaquille O'Neal in the All-
Star Game, Bryant totaled just 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting in nearly 29
minutes of court time. It's his lowest point total since February 5, 2008,
when he scored six at New Jersey.
Lamar Odom scored 15 and had a season-high 20 rebounds for the Lakers, who won
for the eighth time in nine games. They headed to the All-Star break with a
113-109 loss at Utah, but have now won 12 of their last 14 contests, also
moving to 25-4 at home.
"We were rusty in the first half," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. "And then
our young guns came in and bailed us out. Obviously we had a lot of support
with Lamar getting 20 rebounds. We started playing in rhythm and passed the
ball well."
Trevor Ariza and Jordan Farmar each scored 10 for Los Angeles, which dominated
by a 67-39 count on the glass and forced the Hawks to shoot 36.9 percent from
the field.
Joe Johnson had 14 points, Josh Smith scored 13 and Marvin Williams 10 for the
Hawks, who came into the post All-Star break having won four of their last
five games. But this was the continuation of an arduous road trip for the
Hawks, who won at Detroit right before the All-Star game. They're on a stretch
of playing six straight and nine of 11 games on the road.
"We played well for a quarter and a half," said Atlanta coach Mike Woodson.
"Then they hit us in the mouth and we shut it down. LA's defense was solid and
they shot it well. They were good tonight."
Zaza Pachulia had 12 rebounds for Atlanta, which has dropped 16 of its last 19
at the Lakers.
Ahead by nine at the half, the Lakers opened the third quarter on a dominating
16-2 spurt. Bryant and Fisher hit consecutive three-pointers, and Fisher's
runner with under eight minutes left moved LA to a 61-38 bulge.
The margin stood at 85-60 going into the fourth, and the Lakers were on cruise
control over the final 12 minutes, even getting new acquisition Adam Morrison
into the game.
The Hawks scored six of the game's first seven points and managed a 24-23 lead
after 12 minutes, but the Lakers used a 12-2 spurt midway through the second,
expanding to a 40-32 lead following a Josh Powell jumper to cap the flurry.
Fisher's three-pointer represented the final offensive push for the half,
leaving the hosts with a 45-36 lead.
Game Notes
The Lakers have won eight of the last 12 meetings...Morrison, who was traded
from Charlotte on February 7, played his first game as a member of the
Lakers...Atlanta plays at Sacramento Wednesday, while the Lakers are on the
road versus Golden State the same night.

Big East Conference odds
Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
