Hossa leads Thrashers over Bruins
Hockey Betting Lines
02/27/2007 -
Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Marian Hossa scored the game-winning goal to
help the new-look Atlanta Thrashers to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins at TD
Banknorth Garden.
Atlanta made a couple of big moves over the weekend that the team hopes will
improve its chances in the playoffs.
First, Atlanta sent defense prospect Braydon Coburn to Philadelphia in
exchange for Alexei Zhitnik on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Thrashers picked
up Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis in exchange for forward Glen Metropolit, first
and third round draft choices in 2007 and a second-round draft pick in 2008.
Tkachuk has 20 goals and 23 assists on the season and 911 career points (466
goals, 445 assists).
Zhitnik tallied an assist while Tkachuk was held off the scoreboard in their
first game with Atlanta.
Scott Mellanby and Eric Belanger each scored a goal for the Thrashers, who
had lost six of seven coming into the game.
Kari Lehtonen stopped 22 shots for Atlanta, which has 74 points, good for
sixth place in the Eastern Conference and one point behind Tampa Bay for first
place in the Southeast Division.
Shane Donovan and Brad Boyes each scored a goal while Tim Thomas made 17 saves
for the Bruins, who have dropped their past two games after a four-game
winning streak.
Boston has 64 points and currently resides in 11th place in the Eastern
Conference.
The game was tied, 2-2, to start the third period, but Atlanta grabbed the
lead when a wrist shot by Hossa at the top of the left circle went through a
screen and over the glove of Thomas 7:28 in.
The Thrashers held Boston off the scoreboard, also killing two Boston power
plays, the remainder of the game for the win.
The Bruins drew first blood in the game when a shot by Jason York at the right
point was stopped by Lehtonen, but the rebound bounced out to the slot and
Donovan's turnaround shot went into the net just 1:29 in.
Atlanta, though, answered on the power play when a shot by Andy Sutton at the
top of the left circle hit off of Mellanby and went by Thomas with 5:25 left
in the first.
However, the Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission when a wrist
shot by Boyes at the left circle went through a screen and into the net with
1:38 left in the frame.
The Thrashers tied the game just 2:09 into the second period when Greg De
Vries sent a pass from the right side across the goalmouth to Belanger, who
tapped the puck into the open net for his 11th goal of the season.

Big Ten Conference odds
Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa
Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.
Should be in:
Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?
Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.
Work left to do:
Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.
Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.
Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.
Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.

Stanley Cup betting
New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
