Hughes aims for sixth win as Yankees and Red Sox meet in NY
Baseball Betting Lines
05/17/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Phil Hughes tries to become the American League's first
six-game winner this evening when the New York Yankees welcome the Boston Red Sox to the Bronx for a brief two-game series at Yankee Stadium.
Hughes was again terrific in Detroit on Wednesday, as he lowered his AL-
leading earned run average to 1.38 with seven scoreless innings of five-hit
ball to win his third straight start and improve to 5-0 on the year.
He has also held opponents to an AL-low .165 batting average, and at 23,
Hughes is the youngest Yankees hurler to win his first five decisions since
Whitey Ford in 1950.
Hughes beat Boston two starts ago, holding the Red Sox to a pair of runs and
seven hits in seven innings. He is 1-2 lifetime against them with a 5.85 ERA
in nine games, three of which have been starts.
New York was denied a sweep in its weekend series with the Minnesota Twins on
Sunday when Mariano Rivera surrendered a grand slam as part of five-run eighth
inning in a 6-3 loss.
"In the end, I didn't do my job. Walking in a run, you have control of
that ... a home run, anything can happen. It's unacceptable to go in there and
do that," said Rivera, who had yet to give up a run through 11 innings
entering Sunday's action. "It was low, he just dropped the head of the bat.
Those things are going to happen, they're professional hitters."
It was also Rivera's first blown save at home since August of 2007, snapping
the future Hall of Famer's streak of 51 straight saves in the Bronx.
Boston, meanwhile, dropped two of three to the Detroit Tigers over the
weekend, falling 5-1 in Sunday's rubber match at Comerica Park. Kevin Youkilis
finished with two hits and Jeremy Hermida drove in the lone run for the Red
Sox, who fell for the third time in four contests.
John Lackey (4-2) suffered the loss after yielding nine hits and five runs
with four walks over seven full frames.
"I threw a lot better than the line's gonna show," Lackey said. "I had some
balls that fell in on me, and had a couple breaks that went the wrong way."
Hoping to get the Red Sox back into the win column tonight will be Japanese
righty Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA. Matsuzaka was impressive
in beating the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, as he held them to a run and
three hits in seven innings. He also struck out nine without walking a batter.
Matsuzaka is 3-3 in seven starts against the Yankees with a 5.49 ERA.
This will be the third series of the season between these fierce rivals, but
the first at Yankee Stadium, where the Red Sox went just 2-7 a year ago. The
Yankees have won four of their six matchups with Boston this year.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds
Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
