Delray Beach, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic got past
seventh-seeded James Blake in three sets Friday to reach the semifinals at the
$500,000 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.
Karlovic defeated the American Blake by a score of 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 on the
hardcourts at Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center to advance. The towering
Croat fired 23 aces in defeating Blake, who was the back-to-back runner-up
here in 2007 and 2008.
Karlovic's semifinal opponent will be unseeded American Mardy Fish, the
defending champion here. Fish beat Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev in last year's
championship match, and Friday moved on by defeating fourth-seeded Frenchman
Jeremy Chardy in a little over an hour, by a 6-4, 6-3 final.
Fish was also the Delray runner-up in 2003.
In other quarterfinal play, Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen ousted third-
seeded German Benjamin Becker 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) and talented Latvian Ernests
Gulbis handled Argentine Leonardo Mayer 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Gulbis saved a set
point while trailing 4-5 in the opening stanza against Mayer.
Nieminen and Gulbis will square off in Saturday's other semifinal.
This week's titlist will take home $75,700.
