Kurt Busch takes pole at hometown Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kurt Busch captured the pole for Sunday's
Shelby American by easily breaking the track qualifying record at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway
Busch, a native of Las Vegas, demolished the record previously held by his
brother, Kyle Busch, when he turned a lap at 188.719 m.p.h. Cooler than usual
temperatures at the 1.5-mile track helped 18 drivers surpass Busch's 2009
record of 185.995 m.p.h.
"It was an unexpected lap, but looking back at some of the decisions [crew
chief] Steve Addington made...I'm following his direction on some of the key
things that maybe I've been missing with the [Car of Tomorrow]," said Busch,
whose last Sprint Cup Series pole came in September 2007 at California. "To
get a pole with the COT, this is my first one with this car. It's been that
long."
Addington served as Kyle Busch's crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing last season,
but moved over to Penske Racing to guide Kurt Busch's effort for the 2010 Cup
campaign.
Jeff Gordon, who won at Las Vegas in 2001, secured the outside pole with a lap
at 188.646 m.p.h.
"Obviously, we would like to be on the pole, but Kurt had a great lap there,"
Gordon said. "I felt like we got a little bit free off of [turn] four, and
that might have been the difference, because it was pretty close."
Ryan Newman qualified third, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the fourth spot.
Earnhardt Jr. is coming off a 32nd-place finish at California after he
suffered a broken axle in the late-stages.
Kyle Busch, the defending race winner, completed the top-five.
Joey Logano will start sixth, followed by Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, Tony
Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya, who was fastest in Friday's practice.
Kevin Harvick, the current points leader, qualified 34th. Harvick damaged the
right side of his car after hitting the wall in practice. He avoided having to
go to a backup car. The Richard Childress Racing driver holds a 19-point
advantage over his teammate Clint Bowyer, who claimed the 13th starting
position.
Robby Gordon suffered engine trouble prior to qualifying and did not make an
attempt. Gordon was able to make the starting field based on last year's owner
points.
Casey Mears and Terry Cook failed to qualify. Mears is in his first year as
driver for startup team Keyed-Up Motorsports. He drove for RCR last season.
Sunday's race at Las Vegas is schedule to start around 3:00 p.m. (et).
