Malisse retires from Memphis opener

02/20/2007 - Memphis, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fifth-seeded Belgian Xavier Malisse was leading his first-round match Monday when he retired at the $665,000 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

Malisse was ahead of Russian qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 2-2 when he called it quits due to right wrist injury. The 26-year-old Malisse has already tallied a pair of titles on the ATP circuit this season.

Sixth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer came back to beat American qualifier Jesse Witten 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Another Austrian, Stefan Koubek, cut down German Simon Greul 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) on Day 1.

Also, eighth-seeded American Robby Ginepri was ousted by Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3.

Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu defeated Australian wild card Chris Guccione, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; and wild card Alex Kuznetsov beat fellow American Kevin Kim, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

This week's top seeds are U.S. Open runner-up Andy Roddick, defending Memphis champion Tommy Haas and last week's San Jose titlist Andy Murray. The German Haas beat Swede Robin Soderling in last year's Memphis finale and also titled here in 1999. The American Roddick captured this tournament in 2002 and was the runner-up in 2003.

Haas plays his first-round match Tuesday night against American Vincent Spadea.

The 2007 Memphis champ will pocket $156,550.
